How to Personalize Your Home and Make it Your Own
May 22, 2018
Every aspect of our lives is personalized each day. If you feel your home is lacking that special touch, here are ways you can customize your home's décor. Your home is a reflection of you and your personality so have fun and show off your creativity.
Monogramming/Initials
Monogramming is a huge trend in home décor. Virtually any item in your home can now be monogrammed with your initials, family crest, or family name. Door knockers, linens, throws, mats, and pillows are common items that can be personalized in living areas.
Heirlooms
We all have family knickknacks or antiques that have been passed down through our families. Many people want to display this heirloom but are unsure how to. Chances are if you have a family antique it possibly looks outdated and you are scared it won’t blend into your modern or contemporary home décor. Try putting it in an auspicious place where it will be in sight but not an eyesore. Generally, bookshelves or wall shelving tend to be a good space to blend these types of items in. Blending is the key, try to make the area look as cohesive as possible!
DIY
Do it yourself or DIY is particularly popular during the holiday season! You can easily make your decorations so that they are tailored to your taste and personality. Wreaths are a great example of a great DIY craft that is super easy to make. Take a look at the different DIY wreaths that are on Pinterest. Framing
Framing is one of the easiest ways to add some personality to your home and also helps you occupy that drab boring wall! Framed art is a great way to add décor to your home but a few more personalized suggestions would be: quotes, vintage posters, book covers, and newspapers. My father had collected newspapers back east the day after my favorite team (the Phillies J) won the World Series in 2008. I selected my favorite covers and then framed them in UV-protected frames so that they wouldn’t yellow as fast. These hang on a wall in my house and are by far my favorite decor!
Message Boards
Message or display boards are great items to add a personal touch to your kitchen or other living area. Painting one wall with "chalk paint" is a new trend. The paint is black and has the consistency of an actual chalkboard that you can write on. Many families use it to post schedules or messages to the rest of the household. If you don’t want to paint a whole wall you can easily buy a small displayed chalkboard that will do the same trick! Not only do message boards add a personal touch, but they are also a great way to keep organization in your home! Here are more tips and tricks on home organization.
Display
The last personal touch for your home is displays! Does your father have an old trophy or signed item, or has your grandfather passed down military memorabilia? If so, you can use clear display cases to proudly display your items while also protecting them.
