Goodbye Grey, Hello Mocha Mousse: 2025's Polarizing New Color Trend
January 2, 2025
Move over all-white kitchens and light grey walls. In 2025, it’s all about toasty earthtones.
Pantone describes its 2025 Color of the Year, Mocha Mousse, as "a warming, brown hue imbued with richness.” That’s a fancy way of saying it's like if luxury and coffee had a color baby.
The polarizing shade, which quickly drew passionate devotees and equally ardent detractors, reflects a growing desire for homes that feel like retreats, balancing the chaos of the outside world with calming interiors.
"To escape the stresses of everyday life, consumers are leaning into coziness," said Jenni Nichols, vice president of design at John Burns Real Estate Consulting. “This warm brown color brings a sense of comfort and coziness to the home.”
Mocha Mousse: Love it or hate it
Not everyone is on board with Mocha Mousse. There are lots of opinions swirling around on the internet (surprise!) on what some are referring to the color as part of the "sad beige" trend. You know, those neutral tones that some folks think are boring. Others find it dated.
Debates are being waged on social media on whether Mocha Mousse is the soothing shade we need—or another muted color that feels too safe.
"While I'm seeing some push back on the color of the year with rants about how 'sad beige won,' I actually think Mocha Mousse is a warm brown that is reminiscent of dirt or terra cotta," said Nichols.
Mocha Mousse might remind you of dirt, but in a good way—like a grounding, earthy connection to nature. It also pairs well with vibrant greens, soft creams, and terracotta accents.
How to embrace the Mocha Mousse trend
If you’re curious about Mocha Mousse but hesitant to commit to a full room, you may want to test it out.
Paint a patch on your wall and live with it for a few days to see how it looks in different lighting. Alternatively, peel-and-stick wallpaper in Mocha Mousse is a temporary option without the long-term commitment.
If you love it, you can paint borders, an accent wall, or even the whole room in the color. Many homeowners take out home equity loans or turn to cash-out refinance or other mortgage refinance options to fund larger projects, such as home renovations or new furniture.
However, you don't have to overhaul your home to get into the Mocha Mousse vibe. Accessories like throw pillows, area rugs, or even lamp shades in this brown can make a big impact without breaking the bank.
“For consumers who view their home as a sanctuary, design elements…that help create a more relaxing environment are gaining steam,” said Nichols.
